Powersports battery glossary

The terms that actually matter when you are buying a battery, explained in one line each. No jargon, no fluff.

Battery

Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)
CCA is the current a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 0°F while staying above 7.2 volts. Higher CCA means stronger cold-weather starting. It is the most important rating for cold climates. Always match or exceed the CCA your machine's battery specifies.
Cranking Amps (CA)
CA measures cranking current at 32°F instead of 0°F, so the number is always higher than CCA for the same battery. Sometimes labeled MCA (marine cranking amps) on PWC and marine batteries. Do not confuse a high CA figure with CCA.
Amp Hours (Ah)
Amp hours measure a battery's capacity: how many amps it can supply over time. Powersports batteries are typically 2.5 to 20 Ah. Ah is capacity (how long it runs accessories); CCA is cranking power (the burst that starts the engine). They are different measurements.
Reserve Capacity (RC)
Reserve capacity is how many minutes a fully charged battery can run a set load before dropping to 10.5 volts. It is more common on larger marine and deep-cycle batteries.
AGM Battery
An AGM (absorbent glass mat) battery holds its acid in fiberglass mats, so it is sealed, spill-proof, and vibration-resistant. Nearly all modern powersports batteries are AGM. The factory battery on most motorcycles, ATVs, scooters, and PWCs is a sealed AGM. You can replace it with the same AGM code or a lithium drop-in in the same case.
Lithium (LiFePO4) Battery
A LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery is a lightweight drop-in alternative to AGM, made in the same case sizes. It weighs far less and lasts longer, but needs a lithium-aware charger. Lithium is the common powersports upgrade: roughly 60 to 70 percent lighter, slower to self-discharge, but pricier and sluggish for the first cold crank until it warms up.
Flooded (Conventional) Battery
A conventional flooded battery has liquid electrolyte you add on first use and may need to top up. Older and vintage powersports codes (many bare YB types) are this design.
Battery Size Code
A code like YTX14-BS or YB12A-A defines a powersports battery's case size, terminal layout, and capacity. Matching the code is what makes a replacement fit. The prefix indicates the family and chemistry (YTX and YTZ are sealed AGM lines), the number roughly tracks size, and a -BS suffix means it ships dry with an acid pack and is then sealed AGM.
The -BS Suffix
A -BS suffix (Bottle Supplied) means the battery ships dry with an acid pack you add once. After filling it self-seals into a maintenance-free AGM battery.
Terminal Layout
The terminal layout is which side the positive and negative posts sit on. Batteries with the same size code share a layout, so the cables reach - always match it.

Charging

Battery Tender / Maintainer
A smart maintainer (tender) keeps a parked battery topped up without overcharging. It is the standard fix for a bike that sits, especially over winter. Use one with a lithium mode for a lithium battery. An old dumb trickle charger can damage a lithium pack.
Parasitic Draw
Parasitic draw is the small current a machine uses while parked and off - an alarm, immobiliser, clock, or ECU keep-alive. It is what flattens a battery in storage.
Self-Discharge
Self-discharge is a battery slowly losing charge while sitting unused. Lithium self-discharges far more slowly than lead-acid, so it stores better.

General

Fitment
Fitment means whether a part is built to fit a specific year, make, and model. A battery that fits one sub-model or displacement may not fit another, so fitment is checked by exact machine.
OEM
OEM (original equipment manufacturer) means a part matching the maker's exact specification, the same as what came on the machine from the factory.
Aftermarket Part
An aftermarket part is made by a company other than the original manufacturer. Quality ranges from economy to better-than-OEM; the key is that it meets the correct fitment and specs.
