Nearly every modern motorcycle, ATV, and scooter leaves the factory with a sealed AGM battery (absorbent glass mat). When it dies, you have two honest choices: another AGM in the same size, or a lithium (LiFePO4) drop-in built in that same case. Both fit; they behave differently.
Weight
This is lithium's headline advantage. A LiFePO4 drop-in typically weighs roughly 60 to 70 percent less than the AGM it replaces. On a small bike that can be a few pounds; on a big touring or sport bike it is noticeable, and it is why race and track builds run lithium.
Price
AGM wins here. A like-for-like AGM replacement is usually the cheapest way to get running again, while a quality lithium drop-in costs several times as much. If the bike is a daily commuter and weight is not a concern, that money is hard to justify.
Lifespan
A good AGM powersports battery generally lasts around three to five years. Lithium is usually rated for more charge cycles and often lasts longer, as long as it is charged with the right charger and not left flat in freezing weather. Lithium also holds its voltage more steadily as it discharges, so the bike feels like it cranks strong right up until the battery is nearly empty.
Sitting and self-discharge
If your bike sits - over winter, or just between weekend rides - lithium has a real edge: it self-discharges far more slowly than lead-acid. An AGM left unattended for months can go flat and sulfate; a lithium pack holds its charge much longer. Either way, a maintainer is cheap insurance.
Charging: the one rule that matters
Do not charge a lithium battery with an old lead-acid trickle charger that has no lithium mode. Lead-acid chargers can use a desulfation or equalization pulse and a float voltage that a lithium pack does not want. Use a charger with a dedicated lithium / LiFePO4 mode, or a modern smart charger that detects the chemistry. AGM, by contrast, is happy on any standard AGM-capable tender.
Cold weather
In deep cold, lithium can be sluggish for the first crank until the cells warm up. The common trick is to turn the ignition on (headlight, so it draws a little current) for a few seconds before cranking, which warms the pack slightly. AGM does not need this, though its cranking power also drops in the cold - which is why matching or exceeding the original CCA rating matters on either chemistry.
So which should you buy?
For a daily or fair-weather bike where cost is the priority, buy the exact-fit AGM - it is the safe, proven, inexpensive choice. Choose lithium if you want the weight saving (track, sport, performance), the bike sits for long stretches, or you want the longest life and are happy to run the right charger.
