Reading a Spark Plug (What the Color Tells You)

Pulling a spark plug and looking at its tip is one of the oldest, simplest diagnostic checks in the book. Here's roughly what the common colors and conditions tend to mean.

A spark plug sits right at the edge of combustion, which means its tip picks up a visual record of how that cylinder has been running: how it's mixing fuel and air, and how hot it's getting. Reading it isn't a precise science, more of a general gut check, but it's a useful starting point when something feels off with an engine, or just as a periodic health check during routine maintenance.

Healthy: tan or light brown

A light tan, grayish-brown, or similar dry, dusty coloring on the electrode and insulator tip is generally considered the sign of a healthy, well-tuned cylinder. It suggests the fuel is burning cleanly and the plug's heat range is well matched to how the engine is actually running. This is the baseline you're comparing everything else against.

Black and sooty: running rich

Dry, black, powdery soot coating the tip usually points to a rich condition, more fuel going in than the engine is burning efficiently at that cylinder. It can stem from a carburetor or fuel injection setting, a clogged air filter restricting intake air relative to fuel, or a weak spark that isn't fully igniting the mixture. A lot of idling, cold starts, or short trips can also leave sooty deposits without necessarily meaning something is broken, so consider the riding pattern before assuming a mechanical problem.

White or blistered: running lean or hot

A white, chalky, or glassy-blistered look on the tip generally suggests a lean condition, not enough fuel relative to air, or the cylinder simply running hotter than it should. This one deserves attention sooner rather than later, since prolonged lean or overheated combustion can lead to more serious problems like detonation or piston damage over time. An incorrect (too hot) heat range for the plug can produce a similar look even when the fuel mixture itself is fine.

Oily and wet: burning oil

A wet, oily coating on the plug points to oil reaching the combustion chamber, commonly from worn valve seals, worn piston rings, or, on some engines, a general oil control issue. This is a different problem from a fuel mixture issue, and it's usually a sign that something beyond the plug itself needs a closer look.

Using it as a general check

Treat plug reading as one data point, not a full diagnosis on its own. On a multi-cylinder engine, checking all the plugs together gives a better picture than judging the whole engine off a single cylinder. And remember that recent riding conditions, a long idle, a cold start, a hard run, can temporarily color a plug in a way that doesn't reflect how the engine runs day to day.
